More sod grass types for your consideration
Tifway 419 Bermudagrass
One of the best attributes of Tifway 419 is that it has excellent traffic tolerance which makes it ideal for homeowners as well as for golf courses, backyard putting greens and sports arenas. This grass takes root rapidly from sod and grows quite fast. One downside is that you will need to mow this variety every four to five days as opposed to the normal 7 days.
As a bermudagrass the Tifway 419 has decent drought tolerance but basically no tolerance to shade. With the right conditions, this grass has a lush, manicured appearance. It’s ability to establish quickly makes it a cost effective option for purchase as sod. If you need pest control for your lawn we recommend our friends at Bigfoot Pest Control.
Texturf 10 Bermudagrass
Somewhere between common bermudagrass and Tifway 419, is Texturf 10 Bermudagrass. As far as appearance goes, Texturf has a wider blade than the Tifway but it’s still an attractive grass and has far less seed heads than common bermudagrass.
According to Save Open Space, like all bermudagrass, the Texturf 10 needs full sun in order to do well. Bermudagrass in general is not recommended for areas with any shade at all such as under trees or close to two story houses.
Zeon Zoysia
Named after the botanist Karl Von Zois, Zoysia grass is a very popular choice of sod in the Houston area. It is a low maintenance grass that does well in a variety of conditions. Zoysias tend to tolerate differences in shade, water and sunlight better than other varieties of grass.
Zeon is a fine textured grass with a medium green color that feels soft under foot. It’s insect and disease resistant but like all zoysia grasses, it can turn brown mid fall and may not turn green again until late spring.
Palisades Zoysia
Palisades zoysia was developed by Texas A&M University. Compared with Zeon, Palisades has a thicker, coarser texture and is distinguished by its ability to repair and regrow rapidly. This grass also demonstrates a higher tolerance to winter conditions and drought compared with other zoysias. This is a great sod grass for homeowners in the Houston area with the main drawback being that it is more expensive than St. Augustine and Bermudagrass.
Emerald Zoysia
Known specifically for its beauty, Emerald zoysia grass has a true emerald green color when cared for properly. It has fine blades that are densely packed imparting the look and feel of carpet. This is a slow growing grass which means mowing every 7 to 10 days during its growing season should be sufficient making it an attractive option for homeowners.
While the Emerald hybrid can tolerate less than ideal conditions like other zoysias, it does better and looks its best with a little more time and effort put into its care.
Cavalier Zoysia
Like Emerald zoysia grass, Cavalier is a fine-leaf zoysia. The two are very similar and both popular choices for sod grass in Houston. The main differences between the two is that Cavalier grows a little faster than Emerald and is slightly less cold tolerant. Cavalier zoysia is also a bit lighter in color than Emerald zoysia.
Of course there are countless varieties of grass out there, but these are some of the best choices for the Houston area. Before you decide, take note of the most important qualities you are looking for such as low maintenance, shade tolerance, color or texture and go for the type of grass that best fits those needs and the needs of the area in which you are laying sod. You may end up needing to compromise on some characteristics, but there is a right grass for every yard. While we do not currently service the San Antonio area, you may consider Bella Verde Landscaping.
